Just how widely do the FLDS stray?
Watching a FLDS residence "tour" on CNN narrated by a young plural wife was very interesting. In another segment was a group interview of several wives. Fascinating - the peculiar accent and wording, apparent sincerity, unquestioned devotion.
Certainly they have numerous positive traits: - peaceful - kind - very faithful - impressively industrious I have to say the video of FLDS reminds me a lot of what I'd imagine the Utah pioneers were like. It's almost like these folks came right out of the 1800s. So... just how widely do they stray from traditional LDS values, beliefs & behavior? Regarding the most obvious differences, the polygamy & illegal marrying of young girls, similar things could be said of early LDS polygamy. Given that young girls of today reach puberty earlier than females did in the 19th century, and several of the wives of JS were 16 or younger, that aspect seems pretty similar, as well. Does anyone doubt the FLDS genuinely feel the spirit of the holy ghost? (Given the Lord's intent for the regular LDS church, how is even possible FLDS would get confirmation on darn near *anything* related to FLDS issues from the HG?) Their "prophets" have certainly been a little sketchy, but the same was said about errors & indiscretions of other prophets, from David to JS to Brigham Young, their weaknesses and mistakes have likewise been rationalized. Beyond the "mainstreaming" of the modern day LDS church starting with the Manifesto, and excluding close relation marriages, aren't these folks pretty much like the saints of 1880? It's almost spooky - their views on race are consistent with that era, as well. Thoughts? |
