Default Prop 8 reaches Mississippi

A friend of mine just called. She had joined the church in April. She's a single mom with a son the same age as mine. They moved into our ward in August and our sons became immediate best friends.

Anyway, she's a liberal-minded woman and she just heard about the church's involvement in Prop 8. She's irate. I really didn't know what to say to her about the issue.

Challenge her to find a Christian-based religion in California that had no involvement in the issue.

That won't work. She was through with religion when the missionaries found her. Then she felt like our church was different than the others so she joined. Now she feels like she was duped and that in fact we're just like all the others.

Our church isn't just politics, and neither is our worship. I'd try focusing on the more spiritual things that seperate us from other religions.

You hate to hear stories like this and I wish I had a good suggestion for you, but as a liberal minded woman, it was likely just a matter of time before she found something to be offended about in regard to the LDS church.

This is kind of what I'm thinking. If she wanted something "different" from what I'm assuming were her stereotypes of religion, I'm thinking perhaps she should have looked into Unitarianism or Bahai or something along those lines.

I hope you can figure out something, though, Soup, because I'd hate to see her grow even more disgruntled with faith in general.

I hate this line of reasoning. It is a justification for losing more members from the fold. "There is nothing more we could do, the fault lies entirely with her."

It is a pretty exclusive line of thinking.

It's interesting how things evolved this past week. On Wednesday, we (i.e. Mormons) were reveling in the come-from-behind victory and patting ourselves on the back for having such terrific organization, fund-raising, and hard-working faithful members. By week's end it seems we are doing all we can to claim that we just played a minor role.

Anyway, that is how it seems to have played out in the Utah media.
