Biker Conversion
BRT:
I have a sedentary job. I weigh thirty pounds more than I should. I live a stone's throw from Rock Creek Park in DC, a biker's urban paradise. I have always liked riding bikes. I want to mix exercise and recreation. Cycling is a family activity, right? (Wife can bike; pull toddlers in bike cart or whatever those things are called) Invitation: "Will you, Levin, buy a bike and use it?" YES! Good job, you've convinced me to start biking. Now which bike should I get? I weigh 210, am 6' tall, and this bike will be used primarily on paved roads and trails. Want mid-line quality: not the Porsche, not the 1987 Datsun; I'm looking for the souped up Honda Accord EX V6. Appreciate your advice. |

Find your friendly bike shop. (We are really excited to have new cyclists btw, but the questions you ask are the same, so perhaps, we can have a sticky post for guys and especially gals who wish to start).
The most important aspect is fit and comfort. You sound about like a 56 to 58, but you should go to the bike shop nearest you with a good reputation. There are several in DC, as I have visited a few. (I never leave home without knowing which bike shop is where). See what they sell and then come back to us. Most shops sell, Trek, Giant, Fuji, Canondale, and depending upon your price point, any of these can be acceptable. Then the componetry also matters, i.e., gears and shifters. In addition, you have wheels to buy and the clothing. Start there, and come back so that we can better help you.

Or if you are super cheap like me and don't care if the bike doesn't fit exactly, order from http://bikesdirect.com
This is actually not recommended, but I thought I would mention it anyway. |

I started a similar thread last fall:
http://cougarguard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11880 You may want to peruse some of the advice I got in that thread.
