Exclamation MWC Seeks to add Boise

Yes, the MWC wants to go to Boise.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson made the announcement today.

He wants in the Humanitarian Bowl.

It would be the 5th bowl game for the 9-team MWC. Negotiations are in place to back-up the ACC in 2008-09, and possibly take over a spot permanently starting in 2010.

He said he wanted the Humanitarian bowl but that he doesnt want to add another team, he said that the MWC is 3-4 years away from adding another team and if they do they will most likely go to 12, split in to two divisions have a conference title game etc. But that is the reason they left the WAC so it most likely wont happen because teams want to play BYU every year according to the commish. He also said if they go 10, then a team like Airforce who plays Army and Navy every year would only get to play 1 other Out of Conference game.

1-The WAC didn't split because they were at 12. They were never at 12. They jumped from 10 to 16, and split because 16 was the stupidest idea ever.

2-Thompson is an idiot. No matter whether the MWC expands to 10, 11, or 12 teams, we should still only play 8 conference games, just like every other conference that has any brains.

3-It doesn't matter where the MWC gains its 5th bowl game, we need one. Both New Mexico and Wyoming have been left out recently. Besides which, it's our best bowl game already. Las Vegas can't be played later because all the hotels are full after Christmas. San Diego is the city's 2nd bowl. New Mexico is a worse location and match-up with no tradition. And Fort Worth is too far east.

Wyoming would love to play in Boise. So let them play there, New Mexico can play their little bowl game and let BYU, Utah and TCU fight it out to play in Vegas. The losers play in San Diego and San Francisco (why does it sound like the winner is actually losing here?)

The MWC has bowl games in:
Las Vegas
San Diego
Fort Worth
New Mexico

With other deals in:
Houston
Boise

No San Francisco bowl for us. The Emerald sucks anyone (held in a baseball stadium).

So let me get this straight.....a BCS conference is saying, "No thanks to your lame Boise bowl game."

So we swoop in and say, "Heck yeah! We'll take it!"

The MWC is awesome.

Why not? It isn't like we are sending our champ there. More bowls = more money. BCS conferences are having a hard time having enough bowl eligible teams to fill the spot so the MWC steps in.

My understanding is that for these lower tier bowls, it is not uncommon for schools to actually lose money because it is impossible to sell their ticket allocations.

I am not sure BYU could sell 15-20K tickets for a game played in Boise in December.

It just seems like an unappealing matchup to me.....a low-tier MWC team against a low-tier WAC team. You could literally be watching New Mexico play San Jose State.

I think most MWC teams could make money at it opposed to the ACC which has to travel all the way across the country. I think selling the allotment would be doable. I think the Humanitarian bowl gets the 2nd place WAC team as long as the WAC does not have a team in the BCS. If this is true, it could be a good matchup for our conference. In some years it would be a better matchup than the other MWC bowls not named Las Vegas.
