In the parabole of the prodigal son, the kid is willfully defiant, going against everything he knows to be true. He doesn't come back to his father until he is as low as a jew pretty much can become. Yet when his father saw him "But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him."
This tells me that God doesn't always expect us to come all the way back before accepting us, but will run unto us to help us on our way back. I would guess that her bishop has some pretty strong reasons why he broke out of the norm. She may have needed the extra help that the Temple can bring us. This is sometimes the case when mental illness is a factor, like in depression.
