I did my canoe merit badge there too. In fact my scout troop was given an old hobie cat that we fixed up and learned to sail. It was good fun. 6 of the world's 25 largest bass were caught in Castaic Lake. I have heard all kinds of stories about giant fish in that lake.

Such a shame. It would have been perfect.

We started fishing in the morning, after a cold night. I wasn't shivering, but I wasn't comfortable at all, and was coughing all night.
My asst. scoutmaster is a much more experienced fisherman. I started fishing with my crankbait. He went down to another lake on the other side, and next think you know he's hollering out "I got one." We run over and he has caught a nice largemouth bass. I keep fishing in my area and reel in a medium sized perch. So that marks the first time I have caught a fish with a lure. Eventually my asst. SM caught 4 bass. Mostly medium to small. He caught all of them on a spoon. One of the young scouts caught a largemouth as well. We kept 3 of them to eat. After packing up and firing off the 22 a bit, we went over to one of the other little lakes. First cast with my crankbait, I caught one! Largemouth bass. It's amazing how big their mouths are. It was pan size. I threw it back. One of the other asst.s took a picture of me with it. I was happy. I have checked off another criteria box on the page titled "manhood"--"Caught a bass". Scouts ate two of them. I had a taste. Sort of a bland white flaky fish. Not too bony. INterestinglyl two of the bass had decent size minnows in their stomachs. (The first scout said "It has a baby!"). Good times. The fishing was fun. |

Way to go, Mike. Bass fishing is a blast. Especially largemouth bass.

Two of my scouts: A nice bluegill, hooked both at mouth and body: A nice picture of the bass-catching asst. SM. The other asst. SM is the one who took all these photos. |

I went to the sporting goods store on Sat.
I talked to an employee and walked out with 6 crankbaits, 5 topwaters, a bag of plastic grey/shad-type worms, and two bags of different kinds of hooks for those worms. I prefer to think that I was not a sucker. But I did manage to see no to the cheap vacation in Branson. My dad is going to give some spoons and other lures. I just outgrew my tackle box in one day. |

My dad said he might give me his old shimano bait-caster that I got him for Christmas when I was a kid.
I think me and my brother went in for $30 for it. So it's probably not that great of quality. However, I don't think pulling backlashes is what I want to do with my time. I might get this little boat for getting to the weed infested, reed-infested places. Pretty cheap. |
