Buy the Athlon preseason magazine, but I wouldn't consider those to be 100% accurate. Besides, there is the question "what constitutes a returning starter"? Does starting 2 or 3 games make you a returning starter? 8 games? 12?

I think it would be fun to do a little econometric model with maybe three variables.

Avg six year computer ranking
previous season computer ranking
# returning starters

Maybe another one for recruiting class rank.

I know the data would be spotty but if you took it from one source, you'd expect the methodology to be consistent one team to another.

You need separate variables for QBs:

Returning starting QB?
Number of years in college (regardless of returning starter status)

Yes, I agree, QB is probably important enough to look at invidually.

Though for a QB, I found from previous analysis that starting experience is more important than class in school. i.e. Jr with one year starting experience can be expected to do better than Sr with no starting experience.

The reason I put that in there is because freshman with no starting experience will not be expected to do as well as a 5th year senior with no starting experience.
