It seems obvious that Smith's confidence is shot, and that he might benefit from another environment. He has the tools and who knows about the mental tenacity, because SF is not a good environment right now.

I think this reveals just how young Smith really is. Beck even now still has a couple of years on him, and although Alex is without a doubt an achiever given how he fast tracked his schooling, I think the challenge of being a leader of men vs. boys may be a bit too much for him to handle at the moment. You take the good with the bad. Montana had to suffer through two really bad seasons as he got playing time and finally secured his spot as the man when taking the Niners and leading them to a come from behind victory over the winless New Orleans Saints. They were down 35-7 at half time, and Joe established himself as the leader of these men. The rest is well known history regarding his ability and respect.

Alex still reminds me of a kid among men still trying to establish his leadership. I don't think he will find it in San Francisco, and if his next destination is one that requires him to be the man vs strengthen an already solid team, he could very well wash out of the league. Until he plays the way he has taken care of every other aspect of his life (by attacking it), he will struggle.
