I love how certain individuals can't resist trolling.

A friend of mine is in the bishopric, and his wife is on the activities committee. The Bishop gave them the ok to have Santa Claus at their ward party but they decided not to. My friend told me today that he has had at least 5 or 6 people come up to him thanking him for not having Santa Claus there because they feel like it detracts from the real meaning of Christmas especially at a church function.

IMO, part of Christmas is being together with friends, drawing closer, and having fun. I would far prefer to have a party with Santa than one of those "Night in Bethlehem" things where the whole purpose seems to be to get you to feel guilty because Mary and Joseph had it so bad, and no one in the ward talks to each other. We have a lot of meetings to teach doctrine and feed upon the Spirit. There is a need for activities that simply help members of the ward get to know each other, and like each other.

I don't understand people who need to make everything into a solemn event. It is a ward party. The celebration of Christmas comes the Sunday before Christmas.

Santa should come right after dinner and give all the kids some silly (quiet) toy or treat after the secular Christmas carols and stand up routine by the ward fat funny guy. After Santa, the main event should be a sacred Christmas hymn or three to change the mood--the old classic Silent Night types. Then have a recitation of the Christmas Story out of Luke--7 minutes max--and have the Bishop say an inspirational something about taking care of each other as a ward family and it is over.

The main event is Christ. Santa makes his proper appearance. Crockpot chili dinner with potluck desert.

In by 6 out by 8.
actually the main event was the takedown and cleanup. The 2nd most important event was the food. The third was faux-Santa.
