"McCain also found himself fighting a losing battle against the legacy of Romney's father. George Romney served three terms as Michigan's governor in the 1960s and is fondly remembered there. More than four in 10 Republican voters said that Mitt Romney's ties to the state were important, and those voters chose Romney over McCain by a solid 41-point margin."

From the AP:
"Romney, who grew up in Michigan and whose father was a popular governor, got a big boost from the four in 10 who said his background in the state helped decide their vote, according to an exit poll conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks. Fifty-eight percent voted for Romney, overcoming the big lead McCain had with those who said Romney's state ties didn't matter much." I helped my son with his math last night and they are working on percentages, so I think I can do this for you.
.58 * .4 = .232 or 23% Hence, 23 percent of those voting said that Romney's background in Michigan affected their decision to vote for him. It wasn't the only factor, it was one factor. That also means that 17 percent of those voting said that Romney's background in Michigan affected their decision not to vote for him. Romney's Michigan roots gave him a 6 percent net advantage.

Good stuff, but you're working too hard at it. It's easy to see the difference between someone saying it was "important" (ie, a factor) and it being decisive (ie, THE factor).
I'd wager SeattleUte knows this, but is still stinging from his NH "Romney is finished" comments.
