There is no difference.

Sin is where you act in a manner contrary to the character of Deity. Transgression is where you violate a decree from God, but the act in and of itself isn't necessarily contrary to the character of Deity (like eating from fruit trees).
At least, that's my sad attempt at an answer after 30 seconds of thought. |

I see sin as a subset of transgression. Transgression is a violation of a rule or law. Sin is a violation of a commandment or law of God.

Alma tells his son that three particular sins are more grave than others. I've also seen other references that transgressions of the law are not as severe as sins.
It seems that there is a ladder of sorts: Serious sins > minor sins > serious transgressions > minor transgressions. Suppose a person shoplifts a Starbucks frappuccino from 7-11, drinks it, breaks the empty bottle over the head of a little old lady,, and curses out a small child who watches the event. Theft, word of wisdom, assault, and offending a little one. I wonder where each would rank on the sliding scale. Last edited by ute4ever; 09-04-2008 at 01:59 AM. |

Personally, I think that it's OT-speak.
I don't know what the difference is and I don't really care.

According to my MP, sin requires knowledge of the law / commandment. So the same act may be sin for you or I but a transgression for someone who does not know better. (i.e. WoW for non-members).
