What major college football sports power is a public school located in a major metro area?

They are pretty rare. Most of them are in college towns.

UCLA?

It depends upon how you define "major".

In one sense there may only be three to five major metros, NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and what else?

Is Columbus?

Is Austin?

But your point has some validity.

I can't speak to Columbus. But historically, Austin has been a small town. That has only recently grown.

YOur point about Young can be made more diretly. The U of U hired a qualified academic LDS as its president.

I'd say mostly the U of U ignores the LDS Church. It's of no moment to the U of U. The LDS Church, though, hates the U of U's academic culture.
Like most of my comments, you missed the point.

I was asking if Young has anything to do with the hiring of professors.

Boston has never really been a major power in college athletics, nor Philadelphia.

DC no.

Atlanta, GTech?

Dallas? SMU had been a major football power at one time.

But more often mid-sized towns supported their alma mater better.

You sure you're not talking about BYU fans?

A Utah fan who happens to attend BYU out of convenience and price is extremely rare. A BYU fan who happens to attend Utah is commonplace.

Ok, that makes more sense.

I thought Mike was taking one of his usual lame shots at Utah fans, so I countered with an equally lame shot at BYU fans.

In the past six years Utah has three MWC titles, has won 80 percent of its games, has a 10-3 record against BCS teams, and Utah has won seven bowl games in a row. Now Utah has a world class coach who wants to stay at Utah, and Utah has raised the funds to pay him a market salary per a long term contract. A fitting capstone! Utah's program and tradition will now really begin to pull away from the rest of the conference. Watch for a surge in recruiting. Early returns already suggest the best Utah recruiting class ever, and they're still beating the bushes and anticipation of 2/4/09.
