I saw recently that the military is drawing up plans to continue with about the same number of troops until 2010. This brings a whole new meaning to the chant 4 more years.
In reality I think that there is no possible way that I can think of that the U.S. maintains the political will necessary to do the right thing in Iraq, which is to turn it into a stable, functioning, muti-ethni democracy sympathetic to our interests and able to help us with our oil problem. I believe that it would take at least a decade, if not longer to accomplish this, and more manpower than we have available, and probably well upward of 1 trillion. So, I think if we are going to leave before the job is adequately done then we might as well leave sooner rather than later. Then we can start going back in to try and quell the sectarian violence that will surely erupt, or better yet we can get someone else to do it or help share the burden physically and economically. |
