Very basic question. Is there any reason to believe that "Reformed Egyptian" was the alphabet/language of choice of the Nephites/Lamanites/Mulekites/etc.?

Moroni seems to indicate that Hebrew was the language of choice-- or rather, it would have been, had it not been altered as well. But given Moroni's discomfort writing in "Reformed Egyptian," it's reasonable to assume that it was not the first language of the Nephites. I envision it as being somewhat like unto Latin for Catholicism-- a language in which important documents were first written, and therefore a language which the priestly caste would continue to learn.
