Why these? Hymns should uplift, teach us, remind us of our spiritual heritage and invite the spirit (the song of the righteous is a prayer unto Me). The first criteria of a good hymn, however, is whether it is something everyone knows and will sing enthusiastically. I think the above fit with what I am saying.

I grow so tired of singing hymns week after week that no one knows or cares for because a well intended choruster is trying to discharge her duty to teach us new songs. Here's the thing, there are only so many hymns in the book and in our lives we have heard ALL of them countless times. The reason no one knows many of them is the same reason that there are about half a dozen songs on the last CD I bought that I can saing along to and another half dozen I skip, to-wit: because some of them are good and some of them suck.

If the sucky ones were going to catch on, it would have happened by now. I'm of the opinion that good music can really make the meeting and accordingly think that there is nothing wrong with beating the "old favorites" to death. There is a reason they are favorites and they are the songs that should be sung most frequently. Sucky ones should be sung an absolute maximum of one song per meeting. If will be less if it is ever up to me. I see zero value in them and a fair level of detriment as the congregation tunes out.
I really agree with this post. In our ward we hardly ever sing hymns that people know. It is like the chorister is purposely avoiding them. I would love to see more some of the more well known hymns actually be sung.

Personally, I'd prefer a bunch of Catholic and Medeival hymns along with some Gregorian chants that nobody knew but those people who can sing. That way, nobody would have to listen to me sing and I wouldn't have to listen to other chortling away.

I find it refreshing when the program includes a copy of something not in the hymnal, such as Come Thou Fount or O Holy Night.
