He's a hero. And almost excommunicated as well (see DOM biography).

I don't think he should've been excommunicated, but he certainly should've been reprimanded. He was every bit as manipulative of the prophet as the DOM authors' claimed BRM was vis-a-vis Mormon Doctrine.

That he was ultimately vindicated in the end doesn't excuse his methods.

I like McMurrin too. In fact I enjoyed, The Theological Foundations of the Mormon Religion quite a bit. He is an important figure in Mormon intellectual culture. However, I think it is worth noting that his beliefs about Mormonism are closer to SU's than yours overall.

You will note, IIRC, that DOM believed McMurrin kept people in the church who would have left otherwise.

He that can hear, let him hear.

Wow, what is this, the sixth 10-page thread about blacks and the priesthood? I'm shocked you guys still have things to talk about.

Or, more likely, you are beating the ground above where the horse is buried.

We had to debate it again due to Christopher Hitchens reading cougarguard. He can now expound about how the Romney campaign is opening deep hidden undiscussed wounds among Mormons, dividing them one against another.

McMurrin was an apostate.
