Anyone who thinks this is a contest is too young to remember the Carter years.

I will endure 8 under W. 8 > 4 My memory of the energy crisis was going to the gas station with my dad on odd number license plate day and waiting in line for what seemed like an eternity. What made it worse was that I was a little kid and my dad listened to the news....little kids generally dont dig the news in the car.

The misery index is one of the more ingenuous statistics trumpeted by a political campaign. For reference (warning, Wikipedia link to follow):
Jimmy Carter, 16.27 George W. Bush, 7.98 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misery_index_(economics)

I hated Carter when he was president. But I think I hate Bush more.
You're right. It's probably at least partially due to the length of the terms.

I don't think Reagan gets taken to task enough for his borrow and spend philosophy.

The next "great" president, even though I don't like according to the traditions of my parents, who came from Kansas, was FDR and before that Teddy Roosevelt. How Reagan stacks up against those is a matter of debate and position.

Bush is a disaster, but Carter gave us double digit inflation (with the help of a Democrat controlled Congress), an energy crisis that actually affected people (long lines because some gas stations didn't have any gas) and SALT II. And there were no terrorists attacks during his term, let alone the first 10 months of that term, nor were there political opponents nearly as vicious as those Bush has to deal with and no cable news. Had there been as many media outlets then, Carter would have felt the wrath that Bush feels (and Bush deserves it all). I will give Carter credit in that he opened the door for Reagan.
