It is a long article. I only read the first page the first time, but then I went back to finish the whole thing, which I am glad I did. You did miss some interesting insights if you didn't read more.

What if you don't want to be the best? I'm primarily aiming for fully competent. Do you have to be single minded to be competent? I say probably not. And I doubt being single minded leads to the kind of life most of us want.

I agree with the competence argument. In much of my life I have acquired competence and something exceeding competence. I have often achieved the bottom end of the top ten percent but have felt frustrated not having become the top one percent. Never having written the Novel. Never having qualified for the podium in a national event. I am familiar with the level of single mindedness to achieve that, but in terms of sacrifice to family and personal life, usually decide, it's not worth it. Mind you, I have sacrificed plenty regarding my personal life, but not all of it. My life is and has been good.

If wanting it all means being the absolute best in your profession or in a few things, then I suppose, except for those occasions where it is absolutely necessary I am unwilling to pay the price. Plus I have such a diversity of interests, I don't want to narrow it down to one interest.
