They're probably afraid someone will ask, what about "by their fruits ye shall know them"?

Not sure why you find this funny. In 1984, Winston Smith worked at the Ministry of Truth, changing historical records to correspond to what the party says happened.

Today, exegesis of theology is not as important as effective administration of large bureaucracies and implimentation of simple policies. The skills necessary are not the same as fire and brimstone preachers motivating people to repent and to join up.

Heh, right. I do believe that of all the things they could be afraid of, that one must be very close to dead last.

Certainly banality is now pervasive, and banality is not a good thing, in my book. But, you know, actually the LDS Church has come a long way since the days of polyandry/child brides, racial apartheid and talk of a white Jesus visiting the Mayans.

I'll let President Hinckley know that you approve.

WHy are you all so worked up? A Mormon just kicked some butt in a presidential debate and PBS just put up a 4 hour doucmentary about Mormons. Lots of press members are asking questions and, as documented here in other threads, lots of the press are getting it wildly wrong. SO in this context the church issues a press release to guide members of the press (and most are too lazy to look anything up that isn't in a press release) about what is doctine as opposed to what somebody like the Tanners or Tal Bachmand says it is. This is not supposed to be an 'exegesis' of any aprticualr doctrine or portion of Mormon history. Sometime you guys get too worked up about things.

Thank you. Well said, despite your unique spelling of "particular."

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

I agree. I thought it was a very timely and illuminating statement. The side benefit is that it ought to put to rest a lot of the doctrine/policy/opinion questions among the membership. We now have the most definitive statement, over IMO, of how limited the scope of doctrine actually is. Of course leaders are going to continue to try to apply the doctrine as best thry know how and some will continue to disgree. That is all fine. But I agree creekster than I don't know what the big deal here is.
