For anyone who is interested, an excellent article that summarizes the extant research on video game addiction up until 2005 is Mark Griffiths and Mark N. O. Davies, "Does Video Game Addiction Exist?"

That study is sitting on my shelf right now. I've read it, underlined it, and sourced it. If I wasn't going to teach in 10 minutes, I'd go into it in detail.
