We tanked in pole vault as well, and were terrible in Marathon unlike Athens.

No 800 meter runner and terrible again in 1500 despite having Legat.

Objection: relevance.

We are discussing the US "demise." The GNP comparison is illusory, intended to show that on a per capita basis, Jamaica is doing much better than the US. However, this technique is ill-fated, as it has nothing to do with the issue at hand.

FAIL.

These are great points. American pluralism, freedom and reslultant wealth, are operating to ambiguate this whole nationalism thing in the Olympics regardless. It's the same reason our NBA guys don't go and slaughter every team in the Olympics anymore.

God bless America! I love America! The greatest force for good ever.

The US win gold in the decathlon. No other country can claim the world's greatest athlete for the next 4 years.

I think the reason for the outcry wasn't necessarily the loss of the sprints, it was the pathetic showing of both the men's and women's 4 x 100 relays. Had they medaled, or even made the finals, people wouldn't be so panicked.

However, four gold medals by the U.S. men (with the 4x400 counted as one) marked a nadir in Olympic competition. Never before had American men won so few gold medals in the modern Olympic Games, which date to 1896.

Further, American men did not qualify for finals in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus and javelin in a particularly poor showing in the field.
