I thought it had a little something to do with the fact that his offenses were stagnating and he left before he could get fired, while his stock was still high.

One thing that definitely helped him decide to leave was the internal struggles building up between him and Bellotti about the QB situation, culminating in Crowton wanting to bench a hungover Leaf for the LV Bowl and being overruled by Bellotti.
