Kick out SDSU and Wyoming and bring in Hawaii and Boise and I'd feel a lot better about the conference.

You know, what happened to Wyoming? Didn't they used to field some decent teams? I have some memories in the 90's of BYU playing some well-fought games with them, and I thought they even had some decent (winning) records.

But basically since the inception of the conference they've been terrible.

I would be interested to know what the difference is between a team like Wyoming and a team like Montana in regard to school size & support for athletic programs.

Montana is routinely a world beater at the 1aa level and competes every year for the national title. If you are Wyoming, and you know that their is a ceiling on your program's potential at the 1a level, I would think that 1aa might be attractive.

Then again, if Utah or BYU or TCU go to a BCS bowl, Wyoming can sit back and wait for the check to come in the mail, so that is clearly appealing as well.

Wyoming was destined for failure. With the amount of money in college athletics, the big schools with big population bases of fans and recruiting will grind out the rest. Wyoming has no chance to survive with small student body, 20K attendance and a population <100K within an hours drive to the stadium.

Maybe I'm crazy,,,well okay there's no maybe about it,,,but I've always felt the same about San Diego State of what Urban Meyer said about Utah when he took over there.

It blows me away that one of the best cities in the country would ever struggle to get recruits and have athletic programs, especially football, that continually suck rocks.

I still think if they got the right coach there that the place is prime to be wake from it's slumber and be pretty damn good. I realize with the competition just up north from USC, UCLA and other PAC-10 programs, but I guess it just baffles me that an awesome place like that sucks so much.

This is exactly what I was wondering. Wyoming is certainly not the only university in a sparsely populated state. This is a bad year to ask, but how the heck does Nebraska field a good team year after year? Name recognition and tradition?

Is there some reason why schools have to limit their recruiting to a 60 mile radius from the school? Eastern Nebraska (Lincoln and Omaha) has a pretty healthy population base and Kansas City and Des Moines aren't that far away either.

SLC is 5 1/2 hours from Laramie. Denver is much closer if I'm not mistaken.
