I would have done what is necessary to catch even just one of them. If it was a teenage kid, I would have called the cops to take him to his parents. A preteen, I'd make him call his parents.

Can it really be assault if your intent is to hold them until their parents arrive?

I don't put up with young miscreants doing anything to my house.
