I think Elder Holland just opened the door for that didn't he?

It's not apocrypha, at least what I got from Drum's post. It's right out of the KJV. I didn't hear the talk, but the concept of a "Mary moment" I think is a great idea. And to interplay that with her seven demon thing, which was cured by Jesus as a metaphor for healing/repentance/atonement would make a great sacrament talk. Maybe I'm missing something here, because it sounds very innocuous the way I'm looking at it.

I think you will have to wait for the next Ensign; it was in the last conference; I believe he quoted from Sirach. On the other hand, here is a talk where Elder Nelson quotes from an obscure coptic text (not part of the Apocrypha but definitely apocrypha):

At General Conference, Elder Maxwell was prone to quote C.S. Lewis, who (gasp) was not a member. Merlin K. Jensen does as well.
The very concept of a "Mary Moment" regards the atonement and accepting Christ, and it occured during the Easter memorialization. So what if the actual term has not been published by an apostle? The speaker was not praying to Mary, lighting incense or stringing beads around a rosary; rather, he spoke of salvation. I don't understand why some feel it was inappropriate. |

Here is the link to his conference talk:
http://www.lds.org/conference/talk/d...-690-7,00.html Here is the quote from that talk: There is a line from the Apocrypha which puts the seriousness of this issue better than I can. It reads, "The stroke of the whip maketh marks in the flesh: but the stroke of the tongue breaketh the bones." If you click footnote three you will see that it is from Ecclesiasticus aka The Wisdom of Ben Sira.

That's what I'm objecting to here. As for Bednar or Holland taking some proverb from the Apocrypha or CS Lewis, I see no harm in that, they are hardly using it to introduce doctrine or change our fundamental understanding of the scriptures. |
