I haven't downloaded the free DVD myself. But it would give you an idea of modern equipment.

This video shows you what a modern beginner's setup would look like. The orange sail must be some sort of cheap beginner sail, because nowadays all the sails are full clear plastic. Of note, look how wide the board is. It provides extra stability, and can also plane in lower windspeed with a big enough sail.
It seems that this sport is more closely related to sailing than surfing. The only similarity to surfing is that you are standing on something, but it isnt even really a board. it looks like a small canoe with a hull. I dont think there was a single wave in any of that clip and everyone was wearing life jackets. Do you wax the board or is it all those foot stirrups?

Looks like a fun activity for when you go to a lake or if you don't want to water ski.

If you were to try actual real surfing, I think you would likely agree that they have almost nothing in common.

Like I said, Laird did it, so there must be something to it.
