It would be interesting to take, say, the last 10 years of players for each Div IA team, and plot a map for each school displaying their recruiting radius.

If I was San Diego, I would give up trying to recruit against UCLA and USC. Whats the point? I would go to Texas, Arizona and places in the MidWest and find some solid kids that are 2nd tier recruits. Guys that will play for midlevel colleges. I can't imagine they would not be thrilled to play in San Diego and play in a good, step below the big time, conference.
Seriously, this conference is Utah and BYU and to a slightly lesser extent, TCU. New Mexico is generally pretty average in football and basketball...UNLV is generally pretty good in hoops and horrific in football...I like Air Force, but I can't imagine them ever being a real football power or a hoops power (even though both have happened at various times for them in the past 15 years). Wyoming will always have one or two great years and 10 real bad ones. |

Problem is that a lot of kids won't want to be that far from home, esp. the poor ones.

That would be step one, IMO. I agree that SDSU shouldn't fool itself into thinking that it can recruit against USC & UCLA. But if all the other WAC and MWC teams can get leftovers, so can SDSU. But like Rocky said, it's going to take a guy with Meyer's charisma and motivation to get that done.

SDSU has a lot to offer in terms of college experience. They need to use it. Good point from Drum in using Marshall Faulk. That would be a great start. Try something else and see if you can work something out with the Chargers and the Aztecs to get some pro players or others somehow involved in the program. Utah and BYU both recruit well...there is no reason th |
