If BYU was invited to the Big 12 and Utah was left in the MWC, I would agree with you. But BYU going independent? No.

Thats quite a difference Mike...if BYU got picked up by another conference and Utah didn't, I would be pissed. If BYU were to go independent, I would not be able to stop laughing. Huge difference between the two scenarios.

PK most likely mentioned this because someone at BYU thought it would be a useful negotiating ploy to leak this.

Lets say we did.... what does that do? Yes, it would allow me to see the games, but then what? We are still on CSTV. No one watches that network. The revenue would be sparse. We wouldn't get revenue if another MWC team went to a BCS bowl, and our expenses would go up due to the additional travel. All the arguments for going independent seem to revolve around the TV deal. I understand that frustration. I just don't see how we benefit in any other way from it. Like I said... we just need to keep focusing on being the big fish in a small pond. It really is what we are! In addition, I would never want to be detached from Utah. I wouldn't want to be in the PAC 10 without them, or anywhere else. It is like a yin and yang thing. We need each other. |

Which brings up the point. There may be rich alumni willing to guarantee the operation for at least a couple of years.

until we start getting our ass kicked consistently. Like I have said before... we do not have depth to compete consistently with the big schools. We would be texas tech if we went independent. Fun to watch, but would never win anything. BYU fans would be pist, and saying we should go back to the WAC... wait the MWC.... wait the MTN channel. These arguments are typical of our society. The grass is always greener somewhere else. I say, stay where we are... kick the shit out of TCU, and Utah, maybe every once in awhile make a run at something national. This is who we are... this is what we have always been. To be honest, we aren't even it right now. We had one good season in 5 years. Lets just get consistent.

BYU had a dark period recently, if you guys have forgotten. We went 14-21 over three years, losing to our rivals three years in a row, three losing seasons in a row, failed to qualify for a bowl. Pretty bad.
During that time period: We had home games (home games are the only games you have rights to TV for) that were nationally televised against: USC, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Syracuse, Boise State, other MWC schools? (not sure what was televised--I was always at the game) This time period didn't do much to hurt BYU in their ability to schedule other teams. I don't have the data, but this time period didn't kill our TV ratings. For example, Cal-BYU Vegas bowl the next year had high ratings. I heard a comment back during this losing time period that BYU's local contract was worth more than double Utah's local contract and their ratings blew Utah's away. Yeah it was a bummer three years, but it would have been no more bleak as an independent. And even with crappy outcome, we still get more $$ than in the MWC. Losing kills a program no matter if you are independent or not. Going independent in football is not a major risk. |

jay, not to mention that if you bowl 2 out of every 3 years, or even 1 every 2 years, you have gotten yourself an improvement.
