It is more fun to talk about Tex in the third person than to address him directly.
Certainly more gets accomplished. I wonder if Tex debates himself in the mirror every morning, just to get ready for the most obnoxious person he may come across in the course of his day.

I feel we have been told it is important because families are important and this destroys families. That seems like a poor explanation to me.
I admit I haven't educated myself on the church's reasons specifically vis-a-vis Prop 8. I haven't read the FP letters or the news releases. I don't live in California and am only tangentially interested in the minor firestorm over the church's active involvement in this.

The only reason I posted in this thread at all is because DDD's position strains logic. But he appears more interested being obnoxious than discussing it. Oddly enough, you, for a change, have been the more reasonable debate opponent.

In any case, I'm done. Carry on.

Overheard at Tex's wedding:

Temple Worker: "Do you, Tex, take this woman to be your wife?"

Tex: "I have already stated my answer here and here. Do a search."

Temple Worker: "I just need a yes/no answer from you."

Tex: "Let me ask you this.....why would the Church ask any of us to get married?"

Temple Worker: "You are an idiot."

I'm just enjoying watching DDD progressively get worked up into a lather about Prop 8 as election day draws nigh.

I am terribly worked up.

So far, my actions include

1. Not doing anything out in the community
2. Posting in some threads on CG
3. Having a 10-second conversation with the Bishop

Harvey Milk has nothing on my activism and rage.

I think the church has stated their reason - they want to preserve the definition of marriage. It seems important to them retain the ties to procreation (or at least its possibility, either in this life or the next). To a church that views eternal families as central to its doctrine, I don't think this is an unreasonable position to take, and I think they've done a decent job of communicating that ideal, as long as you can filter out all the noise from the underlings about promoting/normalizing homosexuality, destroying families, etc (I still haven't heard the church officially make any of these arguments).

So the question is over the means of promoting the ideal. Personally, I think the church needs to stay out of politics, which is why I don't think I would support their efforts for Proposition 8. However, I can certainly see the other side of the argument , as long as they don't try to argue that legalizing gay marriage is going to make my kids gay or cause my marriage to disintegrate.

The church would have more success in preserving definitions of words if they had a mole at Merriam-Webster. Times! They are a-changin'!
