Do you think they could or should treat their employess better if it means tweaking their profit margin a bit?

I understand your sentiment about Wal-Mart helping lower income Americans but my problem with them is how they treat their workers. That, and their butting into the election.
It's easier to get into Harvard than to get a job at Walmart. If you want to be of the select few show some dedication to your company.

So companies shouldn't worry about social responsability. Let the peons starve!

I'm not talking about low wage workers becoming wealthy I'm talking about them having acces to affordable health care.

And you like Obama why?

It is a lonely spot to hold on this board.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with businesses (big or small) who treat their workers as serfs.

I'd be a piss poor business owner

Apparently your sarcasm-meter is broken or non-existent.

Okay, I've always heard both arguments about Wal-Mart, either
1. That it stimulates the economy by providing low-priced goods and gives people better quality of life than they could otherwise afford, and that it employs people that frankly might not be employable in other settings
or that
2. It keeps prices artificially low by paying substandard wages, by encouraging part-time employment to avoid providing benefits, and that it decreases competition by maintaining these prices that no one else can match. There are also allegations that workers are expected to work off the clock, etc etc.

so, really smart people, what's the story?
people continue to shop there. If people don't like Walmart, they should stop shopping there. I think its called capitalism.

I like Obama because his economic policy director found out that Walmart benefits the poor.

Walmart offers its full-time employee health insurance after 6 months. It even offers part-timers health insurance after 2 years, very unusual in retail. Target doesn't offer health insurance to part-timers who work less than 20 hours/per week.

A lot of workers at Walmart don't want it because they're covered by another family member or they'd rather go on Medicaid.

It's crappy insurance a lot of the workers can't afford.
The old grocery chains like Kroger have much better insurance.
I buy what you are saying about Wal-Mart helping the poor man's dollar stretch further but when you try to tout them as a generous employer you have definitely stepped into the land of the ill-informed.

So in your warped world if people aren't forced to work at a place then the employers has every right to treat them like shit.

What an evil outlook you have
