Default 5 Utes sign FA deals

Looks like 5 Utes will get a shot in an NFL camp this year.

Gabe Long - Houston
Martail Burnett - Minnestoa
Derick Richards and Steve Tate - Tampa
Boon - New Orleans.

Of those I think Long and Burnett have the best shot. I wouldn't rule out Steve Tate landing a special teams role in Tampa...despite what some may think.

Long and Burnett have a great shot. But I am sorry there is no way in hell Steve Tate makes that squad. He is slow and undersized for the NFL. You can let me have it all you want if he makes. I will take my beating. I just don't see him making a team.

I know that many cougar fans just don't like him...and that's understandable and I certainly cannot judge your motives for thinking he won't stick...and he might not. I thought he had a very good career at Utah at the S position and was at least as qualified as the kid from Army that got taken.

I agree that it is a long shot.

He did have a good career. A couple of years of a 100+ tackles are very impressive.

It doesn't have anything to do with not liking him. He simply just doesn't have the NFL intangibles or talent.

Morgan Scalley was a better player than Tate, and if he couldn't make it, no way in hell Tate does.

And yes I'm separating his college career from his pro potential. He had a very good college career, but he's just not NFL material.

I have no opinion as to the NFL-worthiness of Tate.

I will say, I hope he still has dreams of Michael Reed....

I think Morgan was a FA signee of Tampa Bay a few years ago...but I could be making that up. Tampa is one of those teams that seems to sign Utah guys every year, so it's nice that they are giving a few more a shot.

I have a basic question. How much is signing one of these FA deals worth? What's the initial money? And then if one makes the team?

Tate is a nice player, but he doesnt have great coverage skills, and his tackling numbers were inflated due to lack of linebacker skill.

Also Whitt's defense is designed for the SS to make a ton of tackles and I think like a couple of other people that there were many over the past few years in that Defense that were better than Tate. Scalley, Revil and Sanders just to name a couple that really didn't make it in the NFL.
