Armstrong breaks 3 hours in NYC marathon
http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/11155.0.html
To me this is an incredible feat. Yes, he has an incredible lung capacity and had been a runner many years ago. But cycling and running are two totally different animals. This article says his longest training run was 16 miles. Another incredible feat. All of this with shin splints, too. I'm very impressed. |

I'm not as impressed and believed he do better. He has all the training tools and had two world class pacers.
I would have thought he could do it better, but perhaps he didn't have the time to train correctly. Or maybe, it's just a matter of training the legs to take the pounding. It usually takes several years before a runner runs his best time in the marathon. It's a good time, but not a great time, especially for a world class athlete.

A world class athlete who has done almost nothing but ride a bike for the past 10 years. Give him a year of serious training and I would be willing to bet he breaks 2:30.
He's not even pretending to think he will ever be a contender for the Boston marathon title. But a 3:00 marathon for a guy who, for all intents and purposes, has only been running for a year is pretty dang good. |

If I had the training and the resources that he has I almost guarntee that I could break 3 hours. In fact I would put money on it, barring injury. I have only been running for the past year and a half, and not even as consistanly as he was able to do. Not like the guy has a 40 hour a week job or anything.
