Default Is the Univ. of Utah a "commuter school"?

This was previously posted in another thread, but it really does deserve more prominence, since the subject comes up often, and there are always a few Utes who do not believe the truth.

When we can settle a matter of longstanding dispute in such definitive fashion, we are required to share. And thus I do.

Quote:
Here's another good one.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16889311
From the abstract:
Quote:
The sample of students completing the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) Survey at the University of Utah differs from the national reference group for the NCHA 2003 in age, employment, residence, and marital status. The purpose of this study is to determine if the defining characteristics of a commuter school increase the risk for suicidal thoughts.
From the body of the article:
Quote:
The University of Utah is the flagship 4-year public uni-
versity in the state of Utah. Because of the unique demo-
graphics of the state of Utah, the student population at the
University of Utah differs significantly from student popula-
tions at similar universities in other states. At the University
of Utah, the mean age is 25 years, whereas the average age of
the reference group is 21 years. Nearly 60% of University of
Utah students work more than 20 hours a week, compared
with 23% of the national reference group. Seventy-four per-
cent of University of Utah students live off campus, com-
pared with 43% of students in the national reference group
who live off campus.
Do we still have any doubts about the phrase "commuter school" being used outside of BYU fans, and that Utah is in fact a commuter school?

LOLz. Stupid Utes.

lol, why does this deserve a separate thread? (With a sticky no less!) It was adequately addressed here.

Who else is going to discuss it?

Utah Valley University has grown quite remarkably over the last several years.

And somehow the University of Utah still can't get a higher caliber of student? It's not like Utah residents don't have other public colleges and universities to choose from. This is for a state that has less population than Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

The reason that they are not more selective is that they can't afford to be. If they want to maintain their current size.

College of Eastern Utah (unknown)
Dixie State College of Utah 6443
Salt Lake Community College 24,500
Snow College 3,000
Southern Utah University 6,490
University of Utah 21,526
Utah State University 21,680
Utah Valley University 26,696

Weber State University 23,335

The latest U.S. News rankings have Utah at #126 nationwide. BYU is over fifty notches higher, at #71.

Not worth having as a sticky anymore now that the Ute forum has been deleted. But worth a final bump.

Not sure what this has to do with football.

I know Miami (FL) is considered a commuter school. Why that would impact football reputation or prominence is beyond me.

For the record, I say the U is a commuter school. Just take a look at who is riding trax. My HS friends who went to the U didn't go live in the dorms, they stayed at their parents house.
