I'm talking about active church members. People that attend church on a regular basis.

TR holders in my ward, are probably about 30% of active adults, I would guess.

I think it is a much bigger step to cheat on your spouse than to fornicate.

I would stand by active if you don't limit it to TR holders.

50% is a bit high, but I am no longer surprised when I hear that someone in the church has committed adultery. I've known of bishops, stake presidents, moms with 6 or more kids... It breaks my heart to see families broken up by it.

If the numbers are really that high, I wonder if there should be more discussion about saving the family and keeping the family together after it happens. The brethren are pretty silent on that, and from a few cases I know about I believe it's common for bishops and stake prez to counsel the wife to leave the husband. I wonder if that is what the brethren would want them to do or not.

many of the early church arguments for polygamy was that it prevented inevitable adultery.

Which I have always thought was an interesting argument given the church's take on chastity now.

I wonder if the brethren feel pornography is the foundation of all adultery, so they focus on that topic.

Good point. If adultery is very frequent, why don't we hear more about it?

maybe because in many cases those that are committing the sin aren't present to hear the sermon.

That type of counseling is more appropriate in private settings IMO, not from the pulpit. Doesn't seem logical to me to have high councilmen preaching, "Brothers and sisters, when your spouse cheats on you, this is what we recommend..." in sacrament meeting.

Well, there are plenty of talks and articles on strengthening your marriage. They probably are taking the indirect or perhaps preventative approach. I think most people who commit adultery don't just decide one day, "hey, I think I'll bone my secretary at lunch." I'm guessing it's usually a result of a gradual deterioration of the marriage.
