Whatever happened to the talk ballad and other thoughts the state of soul music
I am a fan of soul and R&B but it is absolutely a dead genre. It can all be pointed to those bastards Boyz II Men that killed it. Ever since them it has been nothing but gospel singing over hip-hop beats. I remember the day when it was the epic struggle between Jodeci and Boyz II Men. You had the bad boys in Jodeci and the wussies in Boyz II Men. I'm not entirely sure how Boyz II Men won the battle. It was officially over when K-Ci and Jo-Jo released the awful All My Life, it really was the end of the war. Two of the bad boys had essentially became Boyz II Men.
Now Jodeci sucked just like Boyz II Men but I cannot help but think the genre would have been better off if Jodeci won. Now despite the murder of the genre, I cannot help but find great humor in the talk ballad and wonder where the hell it went. At about 2:40 the talk ballad portion begins and it is just hilarious. "Yes, baby my heart is lonely. My heart hurts baby, because I feel pain too." The world needs another talk ballad The sad thing is the savior of the genre was there. D'Angelo was popular and his albums were absolutely classic. I think that Voodoo is one of the best soul albums ever made. It ranks right there with the best stuff ever done in the genre. Unfortunately, D'Angelo preferred marijuana more than being the successor to Marvin Gaye. Seriously a shame. The thing with D'Angelo is he was also just amazing in concert. This is one of those people that I would never miss if he ever toured again. |
