Default Teaching your kids morality

Something interesting came up in our FHE this week.

We feel like we're almost over-the-top in how often we teach Law of Chastity and update the kids on the sex talk but feel it's important.

The kids were complaining that FHE was going to be on Law of Chastity AGAIN. So I ask how many times they're taught against drugs at school. "ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME". So that made me think what the ratio of times I was tempted to break law of chastity as a youth compared to number of times I was tempted to take drugs (might be zero).

So my takeaway was 1. law of chastity should at least get equal time as say no to drugs and 2. schools are actually pretty effective at teaching morals--when they're allowed to do so.

Yup. Our FHE is a constant process of me trying to teach and then yelling at the kids for fighting or not paying attention or answering my simple questions with dumb answers. But amazingly they do seem to retain some things, so I would say yes but it's a possible no.

I'll try that with my 9-year-old and 8-year-old. But first I guess I need to teach them how babies get in their mommy's tummies.

Drugs and pre-marital sex are apples and oranges. One is completely unnatural. The other is biologically hard-wired into most people. There's no evolutionary strategy to smoking weed, but there's plenty to producing offspring.

My 10 year old daughter and 8 year old son got the specifics about a month ago from dear old dad when it came up in the course of conversation (we've always been pretty open in talking about our bodies and sex in our home - my kids call their sexual organs by their right names). When I told them it didn't work to produce babies every time, their reaction was "yuck, you and mom have done THAT eight times?" (At least twice for each of four kids is the math I assumed they made). I decided not to shock them further by making an estimate of the real count.

They were quite horrified by the idea - now, if I can just keep them horrified for the next 8 or 9 years.

I'm actually very glad, because it makes discussions about pornography, child molesters, modesty, and such much easier. Kind of clears up the puzzle in some ways.

I think the teaching of morality is bypassed in many homes just because it can be uncomfortable for a parent to teach. WOW will be hammered into a kid constantly because that's easy to talk about. I think people would be shocked at the number of kids that wouldn't dream of having a beer but have no problem with oral sex because they aren't going all the way.
