Default Conservative Utah my a$$

Awawsh in a surplus and no tax decrease. Actually an increase.

I like reading the comment section. As one reader said, Utahns are suckers for tax increases. Always some sob story.

Seriously, if it wasn't for abortion and gay rights, this would be a democrat state.

"It's really rather straightforward," said House Speaker Greg Curtis, R-Sandy. "Philosophically I can look at it and say I made a philosophical decision that it's not a tax increase. It's a tax shift."
WTF??? Sounds pretty Clintonian there, Mr. "conservative" lawmaker.

Hucks wing of the evagelical religious right is in lock step with Utahns except both groups hate each other based on their Christian values.

Here's one of the responses:

"The press will not report accurately but the Utah Legislature lowered the general state sales tax last year from 4.75 to 4.70.

"They have proposed raising the rate back to 4.75 for transportation and offsetting that with 20 million in tax cuts. Therefore, we'll be paying the same amount we were last year.

"The Utah Legislature has cut the state sales tax on food by 200 million and lowered income taxes over 300 million the last two years, they've balanced the budget and made education an absolute priority."

Is this correct?

Based on the repudiation of school vouchers - a sobering democratic message from the Utah public to the rightwing cabal of the Utah legislature - raising the sales tax modestly back to where it was recently seems like a prudent & sensible measure.

My brother is thinking about trying out high school physics teaching, and he told me the other night that Utah has added a whole bunch of monetary incentives for teachers. I got the impression that Utah would still be a lousy place to teach compared to other states, but I guess I can confirm that they're doing something to help the education system there.

When are ya'll going to get the message that Republican does not necessarily = fiscally conservative. In fact, in many cases it does not. If economics and fiscal conservatism are your big issues you can find heroes and villains on both sides of the aisle.
