why is the search function in yahoo email so crappy?

Frankly, it's a deal-breaker. Keyword searches just plain don't work.

Stay away from yahoo email if you can.

yahoo e-mail is good for one thing only - receiving spam.

If I visit a site that I'd like to see but have to register an e-mail before participating on that site, I sign up with my yahoo account.
