Shame on creekster for being a charlatan.

unless he was actually in the Charlatans UK, in which case, that would be cool and interesting.
I have the Charlatens UK "Songs from the Other Side" (b sides) in heavy rotation.

e.g. on Creekster...

Wow. OK, that certainly is impressive. Although that seems to be more a discussion of musicianship, composition, or music theory, as opposed to a discussion about bands/shows/etc. The aforementioned is WAY beyond the scope of my enlightenment.

There was a reference to West Side Story, which I could discuss ad infinitum because it is one of my favorite all time movies.

I also saw Bruce Springsteen live at that Coliseum for the Born in the USA tour. He played Born to Run. I must admit, at that time, I did not notice the minor 7th interval. To be fair, I wasnt really listening for it, though...

PS Charlatans were cool. SFTOS is a good disc. and good one to introduce an invetigator to the band.

That was great! That must have been an ad that was around when I was in Italy on a mission, as I've never seen it before.

Thanks for posting it.

My lament is that it does not seem that there are others here who enjoy music as an active hobby (be it good music or bad music). By active hobby, I mean, are you going to shows, are you out record shopping (or disc shopping), do you read about new bands or follow them, etc....OR, do you listen to the radio and determine what you like based off a playlist that some old stuffed suit at ClearChannel decided he wants you to hear and purchase? It isnt that big of a deal, though. I love talking about sports and politics, too.

Good music is like pornography. I know it when I see it....er, hear it.

Your guitar skills sound comparable to mine. I play for my children now, until they can get to an age where they can detect that I suck. Once that happens and they no longer appreciate my musings, I get revenge by putting them under tremendous pressure to excel athletically and academically.
I sort of dig Brad Paisley, but he's one of the very few country guys I can stand, and even he gets a bit twangy for me at times. He has insane chops and can shred like mad, and includes a lot of country rock stuff amid the more twangy tracks. He also stays away from the brainless jingoism that characterizes so much country music.

One of my best friends in college is touring with a pretty popular country act right now and he turned me on to Paisley. I'm really proud of that guy, as after so long wondering if he should, he one day up and moved to Nashville to try to live the dream, and he's doing it. He is an absolutely incredible guitar player. He's the one that taught me that shredding should be the least of a player's worries, as being able to improvise over any progression, and being able to play the exact chord that you have in your head at any given time is infinitely more useful. We used to play a game where I would play a chord with my back turned, and no matter how complex or dissonant, he would figure it out in his head in 5 seconds or less. On the mission he used to play piano arrangements out of the hymn book on his guitar by sight. Compared to him I was nothing and I've gotten a lot worse since then.

Folks here in Salt Lake were very receptive to GLJ during that show. Interesting how bands are treated/accepted differently around the country, eh?

They killed in LA, too. At the time, "Desire" was a really popular song, as was "The Motion of Love." House of Dolls had just been released at TMOL was getting airplay on KROQ like mad.

I love New Order, but they werent as good on that tour. Echo was great. I remember a great version of "Heads Will Roll."

Now that is an amazing talent.

One thing I do appreciate about country is that it has never strayed from its roots. The culture still holds to the tradition that to earn your chops and be legitimate in the industry and amongst your peers, you need to go make your bones in Nashville. I guess to a lesser extent, american heavy metal was that way with LA/Sunset Strip being the epicenter, but that was only for a relatively brief decade. All the country greats have passed through Nashville and were launched there. It has always been that way and will likely never change. It is a great city to visit if you like music history...or BBQ. Or Minnie Pearl hats.

Dang, it's been about 20 years since that show happened. I don't remember it as well as you do, but then, I've been to so many shows that I have my memory banks over-filled.

KROQ was a great station to listen to when I was in Orange County from '87-'89. KJQ was the SLC version, but it went away with new management and now I don't like any of the new alternative/progressive stuff, save for a handful of bands. Now I just listen to satellite radio - Sirius 22 First Wave - so I can hear the music that I like.

OK, I apprecaite the love, but I am no guitar palyer. To paraphrase one of my favorite bands, I am strictly ryhthym, I don't make it cryor sing. I have played in a few bands, but usually I was on keys or bass, but rarely guitar (except where an extra strummer was needed). I think I understand music, but as TD points out it is mostly theory, and even then my knowledge has pretty clear limits.

Music as porn a la Potter Stewart, is an interesting htought, but doesn't that mean that you cant really be critical of anyone's tastes?

COUntry may not have strayed from its roots but I think htat its roots strayed from country. A lot of what comes out of nashville now, IMO, is nothing more than pop with a steel guitar (and usually not even that now) and a pretend twang. Country was white man's blues. It is muddy waters and Robert Johnson without the syncopation and corolful imagery. It's bluegrass come out of the mountains into the plains and shares the hardness of that choice. THink of Hank Williams and compare it to Garth Brooks. Then realize that Garth Brook is considered more traditional than most country now. I really like old counrty, not so much of the new stuff.

TD and Woot, for your benefit, I am an old fart, and much of what I type really makes that obvious, but what can I do? It's what I think.
