Why the Big 12 is not interested in BYU
Simply put: money.
They view BYU as another mouth to feed, that doesn't increase the size of the pot of money. Any additional team would need to be worth $15 million per year. They don't need any teams for a conference championship game, since ABC/ESPN have guaranteed them the money for the game WITHOUT actually holding it. I think if the Big 12 were to add teams, BYU would be a great candidate. Because of the fact that they are the most valuable "franchise" out there on the market. In fact, I believe BYU is worth more than Utah. But the Pac 10 doesn't want to deal with BYU's baggage. They want the public school that will hopefully bring in the SLC market. It's pretty clear that the Big 12 is run by morons, and there is little goodwill or cohesion between the universities. It may implode yet. |

The problem with the Big XII minus 2 is Texas's control over what gets done, the Sips complete lack of loyalty to anybody. BYU would have to control multiple markets in order to be attractive enough. In fact, I believe has influence in three major markets, SLC, LV and Phoenix, so a move to include BYU will be attractive there.

One thing BYU could do is agree to come in as a "junior partner". Agree not to take a full share for a certain number of years.
Even at 5 million a year, that would be big compared to the 1.3 that the MWC currently gets. Could be a serf in Texas' kingdom. |

Maybe a junior member for a number of years unless Texas leaves the union.
