Actually, punctuation was established primarily by printers and type-setters. This little book gives a fun history of punctuation:

Eats, Shoots Leaves was recommended to me by my librarian aunt. She thought I'd enjoy it as an English major and usually I love everything she recommends. This however got old after the introduction. Same jokes over and over.

The only thing I found implausible about The Road was that the son and father came upon the large store of food at that house.

I mean, wouldn't all the people already have been eaten?
