Lincy and Cy

I was reading about the NL Cy Young race this morning and it reminded me of a cool write-up from a few months back on Tim Lincecum in SI. Lincy looks like he's on track to win the NL award - leads in ERA, SOs, Win prct., etc.

The guy is only making $400k this year! Crazy.

The SI article is a cool story of a father coaching a son and the dad telling college coaches to not screw with his motion. When he was drafted, many scouts said (and still say) his body can't take his motion over the long haul. It's the same thing they said about Pedro.

Before Tim accepted a full ride at Washington, Chris [Tim's dad] made the Huskies' coaches promise they wouldn't change his mechanics…

Where Lincecum truly separates himself from most pitchers is the length of his stride. It is ridiculously long as it relates to his height. And just as his left foot, the landing foot, appears to be nearing the ground at the end of his stride, he lifts it as if stepping over a banana peel -- extending his stride even more. The normal stride length for a pitcher is 77% to 87% of his height. Lincecum's stride is 129%, or roughly 7 1/2 feet.

I love the fact that the kid is 5'11' 170 and ripping up the majors.

The most amazing thing to me is a stat Buster Olney posted, he has made 17 starts where the Giants have scored 2 runs or less this season while he was in the game. He is still 17-3. Also most thought with his violent throwing motion he would be a closer in a Billy Wagner mold. This kid is unbelievable to watch.

Wow, that is some serious over-the-top arm-whip. If it works - which it apparently does - then more power to him.

I haven't seen this guy pitch yet. What's his fastball mph? What are his other pitches?

98-99 fastball, then he throws a hard curve about 86-88. But his best pitch is probably his changeup.

He's nasty. You'd be a fan. His power comes from his huge step. Pretty amazing stuff.

Sweet. I need to watch the kid pitch. From a catcher's perspective, it's fun to see the varying styles of pitching.

Does winning the Cy come with a monetary bonus? If so, I hope he uses it to go get those teeth fixed.

I think the kid *only* made $350K last year. By MLB ace standards, obviously, that's nothing. A-rod makes as much in a week. His agent will be licking his chops.
