No matter how many mid-majors are ranked in the top 12, only the highest ranked team gets an automatic berth, while the others are merely deemed as eligible for at-large selections.

Amongst the BCS conferences, only teams in the top 14 are eligible for at-large selections, and a conference cannot have more than two teams in the 5 bowls. Therefore, if there are 5 Big 12 and 4 SEC teams crowding the top 14, and only 4 of them can participate, that opens the door for a second eligilbe at-large mid-major to participate.

You guys keep saying that there's only one guarantee, and I know this is the common perception, but to me, that's not what the rules say. The link I'm showing says a non-BCS is guaranteed if it's the highest from its conference, and it's either in the top 12 or in the top 16 and higher than BCS conference champions--thus potentially one from each non-BCS conference. Do you have a link that says differently?

"No more than one such team from Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference shall earn an automatic berth in any year. (Note: a second team may be eligible for at-large eligibility as noted below.) If two or more teams from those conferences satisfy the provisions for an automatic berth, then the team with the highest finish in the final BCS Standings will receive the automatic berth, and the remaining team or teams will be considered for at-large selection if it meets the criteria."

Ok...I stand corrected.

(It still is a little ambiguous--do they mean two from each conference individually or as a group? But I'll sit down now...)

Don't confuse automatic selection with eligible at-large selection while reading through the BCS rulebook's maze of run-on sentences.
