Default I am going to try and make homemade root beer

A previous attempt as a young man went in a very disgusting way.

I shall now correct the mistakes of my youth.

Send some my way, if you don't mind.

Actually, you've inspired me to try to make my own. My hope would be that it turns out even just a modicum as good as what my uncle used to make when I was a kid.

If you are successful, please post.

We tried once also. Disgusting.

The Waters household now has fresh, cold homemade root beer on tap.

So far we are using store-bought extracts. To that we combine a bit of honey, refined sugar, and homemade vanilla extract. I don't know that we've put in enough vanilla extract for me to taste it. Funny thing is that the more vanilla extract I put in, the more vodka I am adding! There goes the non-alcoholic thing (although the amount is presumably minimal).

The next spice I am think of adding is cloves. Make a bit of liquid clove extract and add, to create more of a deep spice flavor on top of the normal root beer flavors. We shall see.

Are you doing something fancier than rootbeer extract, sugar, water, dry ice?

yes.

No dry ice. Yeast.

Ultimately I would like to have a co2/water carbonator , or co2 injector at the point of delivery. We will see what the missus allows.

Out of curiosity, why not dry ice? Is it less "purist"? It seems like it would be much easier, although I've never tried the yeast thing.

Did that on the mission. the yeast flavor is interesting, but not bad if you haven't had rootbeer in almost 2 years.

My grandma used to make it alot when I was a kid. That is what she had for my grandpa to drink when he came in for lunch when he worked the ranch. He switched to rootbeer from beer when he was called as bishop.

We made that all the time when I was a kid. I acquired a taste for it. A few years ago my wife found a bottle capper in her grandmother's house. We scrounged up some old bottles and ordered tom caps on the internet and whipped up a batch. The kids thought it was gross, but we liked it.
