Default Elderly Drivers, Family Responsibility and Liability

I read this morning about the tragic auto/pedestrian accident in Salt Lake City involving an 86 year old driver who killed a father and daughter walking in a crosswalk. Here in Virginia, the family of the driver would be held liable for allowing him to drive. Whenever I visit Utah, there seems to be a disproportionate percentage of elderly drivers who are obviously not fit. Why didn't this man's family show some courage and get him off the road? This is an unspeakable tragedy!

Yes, it was awful. The little girl was in kindergarten here at the school where my kids attend. It's really hit the neighborhood hard.

I agree that the family should be held responsible and I also agree that far too many elderly drivers should not be driving. Unfortunately, until a family member of anyone that makes the laws i n Utah is killed in the same manner by an elderly driver, this will continue.

You make a great point about Utah laws. There appear to be only three requirements for election to the Utah State Legislature:

1. LDS
2. White
3. Republican

Is the society in Utah still so homogenous that opposing views are considered "evil"?

Do you believe that evil exists?

Great transition! First you must define evil. It is certainly a relative term.

I'll take it to a new thread rather than hijack yours.

Maybe it's just that the majority of the population in Utah is:

1. LDS
2. White
3. Republican

and so they tend to elect those that they feel best represent their views?

Problem is the elected representatives fail to listen to the views of the majority (e.g. RSL stadium - according to Dan Jones, only 36% of Utahns supported this legislation).

Default Utah's legislature has some real weirdos on it

Chris Buttars, Howard Stephenson and Curtis Bramble are chief among them

they cater to the Eagle Forum crowd

They make Chris Cannon look reasonable
