Default Photos from San Diego this morning

These were taken at 7:20, about 25 minutes after sunrise. It took the sun a moment to rise above the haze and smoke cover.

Looking east, from the coast

Looking east, from atop the hill

Looking northeast from atop the hill. The "Witch fire" is on the other side of the hill that you can faintly see in the background, about 16 miles from my vantage point.

Looking southeast from the same spot. The "Harris fire" is about 20 miles from that vantage point. On a clear day, you can see the city skyline just on the other side of that harbor.

Looking south from the same spot.

Looking west from the same spot. It is difficult to see the coast although I was only one mile east. You can tell where the street ends.

Trail of smoke seen from the coast. Satellite images show the trail is visible for about 275 miles.

I need to find my photos of our house in Saudi Arabia 150 miles south of the oil fires in Kuwait during Desert Storm. It was as dark as sunset at 2 in the afternoon.

I am totally unfamiliar with these areas where the fires are.

What kind of fuel is there for these fires? Most of the areas in SoCal where I have been there was very little vegetation. Aside from the wind, how are these fires spreading so rapidly?

Google Maps has a great overview of the areas.

For example, this is a view of the north end of San Diego State University, sitting atop the I-8:

I have a storage unit out in Spring Valley, near where I used to live when first moving here. It is now in the danger area. Good thing it is insured for $25k.

Photos from this evening's sunset.

As any photographer knows, the end result does not do justice as to just how red it was out there tonight:
