Default Norman Mailer and Gary Gilmore

I was briefly reading about that episode today. Who has read The Executioner's Song? What makes it good (assuming it is)?

I've read it, but it's been awhile. It's a fascinating read, sort of a white trash love story. It was eye opening to read about the dark cultural underbelly of uber-Mormon Utah County. I remember reading the book and thinking, "I can't believe these people exist in Happy Valley." Drugs, booze, sex, etc. It seems as if everyone is on their fifth kid and fourth marriage by age 25.
