Default Were Luke Staley's injuries truly career-ending

or did he just give up? It was such an abrupt retirement for him, and I don't think I ever saw a straight answer on this over a CB.

As his last surgery was explained to me, it was to fix an earlier botched surgery (that loose tendon in his knee). He wasn't really injured, it just started bothering him, he had the surgery, he came back, got cut and quit.

Is there more to the story than that?

Default Staley Injuries

Luke was told by doctors that his knee would never fully recover and that his ankle injury was also very damaging. You have to remember that he had six surgeries just in high school. I played golf with Lavell Edwards this June in Richmond, VA and he told me that Luke Staley was the finest athlete that he ever recruited but that his body could just not stand up to the punishment. Lavell said that Luke could have been as good a RB as anyone in the pros had he been fully healthy. He had that rare combination of size and speed, plus he had the ability to kick it into a higher gear once he got open.

I know he took a lot of ribbing from the small minds on the Ute board for selling cell phones while he finished his degree but my hat is off to him for coming back and graduating.

John, it would seem that you've fallen into the same trap as those Ute fans with this comment. While I give Staley a lot of credit for doing what needed to be done in order to finish school, my guess would be that the jokes about Staley were directed at those Cougars who believe BYU is the superior place to get an education.

it's a famous quote from Lenny Gomes (?), before a rivalry game.

That's the information I was missing. Thanks. It's really too bad, because he had such talent. I remember that Deshaun Foster was the other big RB at the time, and I had the chance to watch Foster a little bit. My impression was that they were similar, except Luke was a little faster and had better hands. And now Foster's playing on Sundays.
