I don't think this is an exaggeration:

The amount of money that would be lost by members not being able to deduct their tithing payments is greater than the amount of money spent by the church on activity budgets for every ward and branch in the world.

And that's not even touching the cost to the church itself, regarding property taxes and other kinds of taxes.

Without question.

The most damaging cost is to image and reputation. Congratulations. You all belong to a cult again. And don't bring up the Catholic Church, which gets a pass on this for a multitude of reasons.

The main one being that Catholics haven't taken their religious leaders seriously for a long, long time.

The main reason is that not so long ago the Catholic Church is all there was in terms of law and order, literacy, civilization; it's the lone remaining living institution that tethers us to the pre-modern past.

This is how the Western world sees the distinction: Mormonism is your Norcalcatish loud mouthed bigoted neighbor with Prop. 8 signs all over his house and car. The Catholic Church is your sweet, wizened little grandma who can't get used to gay marriage because of the epoch in which she was born, but whom you still listen to on a variety of important issues.

SU is right in the sense that the Catholic Church, in modern times, has an extensive history of weighing in on the important moral issues of the time, in a way that it is not easily pigeon-holed as conservative or liberal. It comes from an authentic place.

The LDS church has no such history.

Good point. How's their tax exempt status doing, by the way?

Golly, did I miss something? I thought potential loss of tax exempt status was one of the lies purveyed by Mormon supporters of Prop. 8. Is there a real potential loss of tax exempt status?
