Default sprinker system repair

I have six different groups of sprinkler heads.

Groups 2 and 3 are not working. I.e. No water coming out of any of the sprinklers.

The other groups are working fine.

I know where there is a sprinkler hardware thing out in the yard with lots of wires coming off of it. Is this a solenoid? Is this the solenoid that controls everything?

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

your valves should have a manual control knob. see if that opens the valve. Solonoid is the black thing on top of the valve. Problem could exist in the solenoid, the wires going to the solenoid or your timing box. attach a multi-meter to see if you are getting juice to the valve. i think you can replace a solenoid, but you might as well replace the valve as they are cheap and easy to replace.

Doesn't the sierra club take away your card if you have a sprinkling system? xeriscape is the dogma.
the santa fe home depot doesn't even sell sprinkling stuff.
